Prossy Akanyo

Gender: Female
Talent Areas: Traditional Dance
Family Background
Prossy was born and raised in Pa Min Ogoto B Village, Gulu District in Northern Uganda. She grew up in a family of nine, with both parents and six siblings. Although her father is a freelance cultural dance trainer, both parents rely primarily on farming to support the family.
Due to limited income, Prossy and her siblings attended under-facilitated government schools far from home – walking over 8 kilometers (to and from) daily, This always left her fatigued and impacted her academic performance. However, her father began teaching her cultural dance at a young age. When she was eight years of age, she joined the Music, Dance and Drama Club in her school and this helped her further develop her talent.
Her father had long recognized the need to nurture her talent beyond the limited opportunities available in their local community. Determined to find a better path for her growth, he actively sought avenues to support her development.
How Rockies Organization Stepped In
In 2024, with the help of her uncle based in Kampala, Prossy was recommended to Rockies Organization. Following a rigorous appraisal process, she was officially admitted into the program in December of the same year — a recognition of her outstanding potential in cultural dance.
Her admission marked a turning point for her and her family. Through Rockies, she received comprehensive support, including school fees, accommodation, meals, and healthcare — easing the heavy burden that had long weighed on her parents. Like many of her peers in the program, she was enrolled at St. Andrew’s College, Ssanda, where she is currently in Senior Three.
Talent, Uniqueness & Achievements
Prossy is a highly promising dancer whose quick learning ability has allowed her to master a wide range of traditional dances from Uganda’s diverse cultural regions. From Central Uganda, she has mastered Bakisimba, Nankasa, and Muwogola; from Eastern Uganda, she skillfully performs Tamenha Ibuga, Nalufuka, Irongo, and Kadodi. Her repertoire further extends to Ekitaguriro, Ekizino, and Runyege-Ntogoro from Western Uganda; Larakaraka and Ding Ding from Northern Uganda; and Adungu from the West Nile region.
Prossy brings infectious energy to every performance. Her quick learning ability and deep passion for cultural expression continue to make her a rising star within the troupe and a promising ambassador for Uganda’s diverse heritage.
Aspirations
Prossy aspires to become a doctor so that she can help in fighting diseases in Uganda most especially in her community.
